Music by Mitski, Kris Wu, and Rich Brian for All Your Cold Weather Feels
Mitski’s album “Be the Cowboy” is number one on Pitchfork’s Best 50 Albums of 2018 list. I’m late to the game–I hadn’t heard this album until she came up during a conversation between Emmy the Great and Jenny Zhang at a literary festival. My world’s gotten a whole lot better.
Kris Wu, “November Rain”
Meet Kris Wu, the musician who prevented Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” from reaching the top of the iTunes charts with his album Antares. I can’t help but like a song that starts, “November Rain just made me feel so lonely.” A rapper referencing Guns N’ Roses? I’m in.
Rich Brian, “History”
This kid’s voice! I could listen to him all day. The Indonesian MC used to go by the name Rich Chigga and realized that it wasn’t okay to profit off the pain of another community so did some self reflection and grew from it and made a change. (I wrote about a situation like this in my short story “How Does a Single Blade of Grass Thank the Sun?” so the whole controversy was thrilling for me, a real life representation of the conversations my characters had.)
